Another busy week passes at Dibden Golf Centre with plenty of events having taken place, not least the BHGC Seniors' Open and the BHGC Ladies Club Championships, which proved once again to be well supported tournaments by local members and visiting golfers alike.
The biggest golf event of them all, the Open Championship, is well underway as you read this newsletter. Did you get up early to see Colin Montgomerie hit the first tee shot at 6.35am this morning? No doubt we will witness yet another superbly contested major event and let's hope the conditions are as challenging as they have ever been. Now, if you love studying the top Pros in action like we do, then watch carefully how they negotiate the short shots just off the green. Most amateurs could really learn from this and the key to chipping the ball closer is to keep the ball on the ground and rolling. The bump and run shot with a straighter faced iron will be their preferred choice and not the lobbing shot with a lofted wedge. It may look pretty, but is definitely not as effective on big, sloppy greens in windy conditions as the low chip.
Try it for yourself next time you play, opt for a 8, 7 or 6-iron and aim for the fringe of the green, get the ball rolling as soon as possible and you will chip it closer. Finally, I would say where ever possible use your putter. Remember the old saying "your worst putt is normally as good as your best chip". By the way, my money's on Andy Sullivan and Jordan Spieth!
