A couple of newsletters ago the discussion was all about the distance that you, as a golfer, should hit the ball and although a long tee shot on a par four can reduce the yardage left, there is still no guarantee such prowess will lower your golf score. From experience, I have played with plenty of short hitters with very low handicaps.
So the question this week is, what is it going to take to improve your scores this season? Well, I'm going to quote Hank Haney (ex coach to Tiger Woods and currently ranked one of the best golf coaches in the world). Now Hank says their are three things you need to do to lower your scores on the golf course.
Firstly, after your initial tee shot find your golf ball at the first attempt and yes the rough is OK to play from (so no lost balls or OOB's).
Secondly, keep your ball on the putting green when using a short club at the first attempt (eight iron through to sand wedge) and that includes your chipping/pitching/bunker play too.
Finally, reduce the amount of three putts you take in your round.
So armed with this information you need to start by measuring your current ability (not your length). Over the next five to ten rounds of golf can I suggest you note down all of your failures, for example, how many three putts, how many missed greens and how many lost balls/OOB.
Yes your overall score/handicap tells a story of progress, but only measures your whole game. Initially I want you to identify the worst part of your game and make it better before moving onto the next bit. Makes sense? Smaller more achievable goals will give more focused successful results. Start out today and let me know how you get on and if you're still not sure come and talk to us at the pro shop soon.
